프로그램 참가 학생
참가국은 일본, 대만, 중국, 이탈리아, 사우디아라비아이며, 주로 일본 학생이 많으며, 일본의 명문대학교의 학생들이라고 합니다. Osaka University(Graduate School of Engineering), Nara Institute of Science and Technology(Graduate School of Biological Science and Graduate School Materials Science), Tokyo University of Science(다양한 학부 단과대학에서)의 대학의 학생들이 참가합니다. 이 프로그램의 역사가 길지 않고 또 따로 한국에 홍보를 하지 않아 아직 한국 학생은 한 명도 참석하지 않았다고 합니다.

과목의 상세 정보
1. Hot Topics in Science and Technology (70 minutes) 4 days/week
Course Description:
This course will help participants improve their critical thinking/analytical skills through a combination of reading articles, listening to lectures, and watching audiovisual programs on current hot topics in science and technology. This course will also help them appreciate the power of ideas in science and technology that often changes people’s lives and the world.
2. Intercultural Scientific/Technological Research Project (70 minutes) 4 days/week
Course Description:
This course will help participants improve their oral presentation skills through an intercultural scientific/technological research project. During the course, they will learn how to make effective oral and visual (poster) presentations and apply verbal-and-non-verbal public speaking techniques such as tone of voice, pace, gestures and eye-contacts to their own presentations. Participants will choose their own science/ technology-related topics of interest, draw up interview questions, interview local residents and/or professionals in the City of Davis, conduct informal research, collect and organize research data, create a power point presentation, and make an oral presentation in the end as a final project.
3. Pronunciation and Listening (70 minutes) 4 days/week
Course Description:
This course will help participants to improve their pronunciation skills through directed practice in various areas of pronunciation, such as stress, intonation, reductions (i.e., informal speech), linking, consonant and vowel production, rhythm, and pitch. There will be a special emphasis on scientific vocabulary. This course will also include practice in listening carefully to a variety of media and using dictation, close exercises, note taking, and other activities to strengthen their listening comprehension.
4. Introduction to Regional Business and Industry (averages 50 minutes, actual time will vary with visits and lectures) 2 days/week = class meets
1 full day/week = field trips and lectures
Course Description:
This course will prepare and de-brief the EST participants for weekly site visits to various high-tech companies and laboratories in the Davis/Sacramento region. The purpose of this course is to present opportunities for participants to become aware of issues for new businesses in emerging technologies as well as discuss critically with peers and local professionals on a range of scientific and technological topics.
