Dear ELI students,
We hope you all are doing well as you make your final preparations for your time here with us in New Haven. We could not be more excited about the upcoming start of our program, and hope you feel the same! To make your arrival in New Haven and the start of our program a little bit easier, enclosed please find some reminders and new details regarding the start of ELI 2010.
1. Arriving in New Haven: Information on limousine service from regional airports (Newark, JFK, Bradley, LaGuardia) can be found on page 2 of your accepted students information booklet. Yale is a short cab ride away from the train and bus station here in New Haven, too. Please ask your driver to take you to 261 Park Street (Pierson College), as this is where the summer housing office is located and where you will learn which room you are in for the summer and all other information about living on campus. The housing office is located in Entryway J, Room 12. It is important to note that you may check-in for your housing between the hours of 12:00 noon to 10:00 PM on Saturday and 12:00 noon and 4:00 PM on Sunday. For your convenience, you can purchase sheets for $20 from the housing office if you arrive after stores are closed. If you will be arriving after 10:00 PM on Saturday we ask that you find a hotel room for the night as housing staff will not be available at that time to check you in. The Study Hotel (http://www.studyhotels.com/) and Courtyard Marriott (http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/hvndt-courtyard-new-haven-at-yale/) are two good options. We strongly advise you to arrive during housing check-in hours so that you do not have to stay in a hotel and can get right into your room.
2. Registration: Registration will take place on Sunday afternoon (June 27th) between the hours of 12:00 noon to 4:00 PM at 246 Church Street. It is mandatory that you register with us before any testing or classes begin. If you have not already mailed us the forms from your acceptance packet (emergency contact card, medical release form, and consent and waiver agreement) please bring these with you to registration. If for some reason you will be unable to attend registration, please be in touch as soon as you can so we can arrange alternative plans.
3. Testing: All six-week program students must be present for testing the morning of Monday, June 28th. The testing is mandatory and ensures that everyone is placed in a suitable academic environment in which every student feels both supported and challenged academically. The location for testing will be announced at registration. Testing does NOT occur for seminar students—you will be given your Monday schedule details at registration.
4. Meal plan: For all those students on the meal plan, the dining halls open for the summer on the night of Saturday, June 26th for dinner. If you arrive in New Haven earlier than this, there are a variety of shops and restaurants to fit any budget where you can eat.
5. Cash: Please do not carry too much cash on you when you are here in New Haven. We highly advise that you take a credit card or traveler’s checks with you as they are safer means of bringing money with you on your trip here to New Haven for the summer.
6. Clothing: The weather in New Haven is generally quite hot over the summer months, but nights can be chilly and we therefore suggest you bring a variety of clothing to be prepared for any sort of weather we may have. For planning purposes, average July temperatures are about 83 degrees Fahrenheit for a daily high and 63 degrees Fahrenheit for a daily low.
